Orange 2012 Afcon: Mali edge out Gabon to reach semis
Mali have made it to the last four of the Africa Cup of Nations by beating Gabon 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw, as Seydou Kieta netted the winner with Pierre Aubameyang missing his spot-kick.
Gabon broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half through Mouloungui, as he hit home an Aubameyang pull back as Gernot Roh’s men took a deserved 1-0 lead.Mali pecked the Panthers back as they were already heading for the dreamland. Mali broke free on the counter-attack. Chieke Diabate did well to make the run up the field, to cut into the centre and fire a shot at goal, only for Ovono to mess with it as the ball rolled into the net. The game remained goalless after 120 minutes and was decided on penalties. Gabon ’s hero of the competition Pierre Emerick Aubameyang lost the only shot in the exercise to send Mali through. The Eagles will now face Cote d’Ivoire in an all West African derby.
